The activity introduced the children to the idea that quilts were sometimes used as signals along safe routes for those seeking freedom. While the toddlers are still very young, this hands-on project allowed them to begin understanding themes of kindness, bravery, and helping others.
Each child designed their own quilt square using bright colors, shapes, and patterns. The process was full of excitement as little hands carefully glued pieces together, explored textures, and proudly shared their artwork with friends and teachers. Every square was unique, reflecting each child’s creativity and imagination.
Once completed, the quilt squares were brought together to create a beautiful class “quilt,” symbolizing unity, community, and the power of working together—values that connect with the story of Harriet Tubman and the spirit of the Underground Railroad.
Activities like this help bring history to life in ways that are meaningful and accessible for young learners. Through art, storytelling, and collaboration, our toddlers were able to participate in a project that celebrates courage, compassion, and the importance of helping others.
We are so proud of our young artists and the thoughtful work they created!
