In recognition of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, our students learned about how these three remarkable women broke barriers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and made lasting contributions to space travel and exploration. Their intelligence, determination, and courage continue to inspire generations today.
Across all age groups, children engaged in outer space–themed projects that were developmentally appropriate and hands-on:
Infants and Toddlers explored sensory materials inspired by the night sky, including starry textures, moon-colored materials, and soft “rocket” play experiences designed to support curiosity and early exploration.
Twos and Young Preschoolers created simple space-themed art projects such as star stamping, moon collages, and rocket creations while learning basic vocabulary like “star,” “moon,” and “rocket.”
Preschool and Pre-K students took a deeper look into space science and the contributions of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. They created outer space crafts, discussed rockets and planets, and learned how these women used math and problem-solving skills to help send astronauts into space. Students also explored teamwork and perseverance through collaborative STEM-based activities.
This celebration allowed children to not only explore the wonders of outer space but also understand that people of all backgrounds—especially strong, determined women—have played an important role in shaping history and science.
